Jerry Lim - kayagum

Track #2 - kayagum, melodica and wooden flute

Recorded and mixed at Studio Larry in Brooklyn, NY

I obtained the kayagum used on these improvisations from a retired American G.I. that was stationed in Korea after the Korean War. He saw it one day at a shop there and after many attempts convinced the reluctant store owner to sell it to him. He brought it back with him to the United States where It hung on his wall as a decorative piece for many years until I eventually purchased it from him in the early 2000s.

Looking for a teacher, I reached out to New York City based kumongo player Jin Hi Kim and she recommended I contact Sang Won Park. At that time he owned a flower shop on Lexington ave. in the Upper East Side. He was hesitant at first but agreed to teach me once a week at his flower shop. I'm grateful to him for not only deepening my experience of Korean classical and folk music but also his kindness and generosity towards me during a difficult time in my life.
